Nominated this year for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards, In Darkness, from Poland, is simply engrossing and superbly powerful. It tells a story from an era where movies have been before, but it is still a tale worth telling.
Thoroughly riveting from the very first, brutal scene, In Darkness is wonderfully told, completely engrossing with some unforgettable sights and sounds. Coming in at two and a half hours, the movie is perfectly paced. I would argue, and do, that the film is better than more than just a couple of those nominated for Best Picture. Alas.
